Zenthrus' Step by Step Painting Guide

Displacer Beast

Step Two: Primer. I prefer to brush on primer (rather than using aerosol primer). Aerosol primer is usually found in Black, White, or Gray although other colors are possible. When brushing on primer I use Delta Dreamcoat Charcoal paint.

NOTE: Mixing paint: Any time you use acrylic paint you need to thin the paint. I use Delta Dreamcoat paints. I find that two drops of paint             mixed with one comparably sized drop of water yields a very good mixture. You want the paint to flow freely without being runny. This can take some experimentation.

When priming I use a #4 brush (which is only used for priming). Generously cover the entire mini making sure that all cracks and crevices are filled. I also prime the base at this time. Priming usually takes two coats with some potential touchup. Make sure you let the paint dry and check it thoroughly for any metal showing through. Touch up as necessary.

Step Three: Basecoat. I have chosen to replicate the colors of the Displacer Beast artwork from the Monster Manual. Therefore, I have selected purple for the body and tentacles, orange/yellow for the eyes, bone for the claws/spikes, and yellow for the tentacle claws. When selecting colors you should use complimentary colors. The most basic complimentary pairs are purple/yellow, red/green, blue/orange. I have selected Delta Dreamcoat Royal Plum as the base coat. Since charcoal is ideal as the deepest shadows of something purple I brush the Royal Plum on over the majority of the miniature, however, I do not paint the deepest recesses under the body and the paws.

NOTE: Basecoat application. When applying the basecoat I use a #1 brush. When loading the bristles the paint should not bubble and the tip of the brush should remain neatly pointed. Always draw the brush in short, precise strokes. Never push the brush as this will damage the bristles.
