Step Four: First Highlight. The first primary highlight color should be slightly lighter than your basecoat. I selected Delta Dreamcoat Grape for the highlight color. When brushing on highlights be sure to leave a small line of the previous color visible. This will create a layered effect that makes the highlights blend more naturally. Also, only highlight prominent areas. Recessed areas should generally remain darker. For the first highlight color I use the same #1 brush as used for the basecoat. The basecoat step and the first highlight step are typically the most time consuming steps in the process.
NOTE: Wet-brush technique. When painting be sure to clean your brush in water frequently and pat the excess water off with a cloth or paper towel. Be sure to use lint-free cloth or lint-free paper towels. When your paint/water mixture on your palette begins to dry just add a little water and remix. If you have to repeat this process more than once or twice be sure to add another drop of paint to keep from thinning the mixture too much.
Step Five: Second Highlight. I used Delta Dreamcoat Napa Wine for the second highlight color. The painting process remains essentially the same throughout the highlighting process. Continue to leave a thin line of the previous color showing so that the colors will blend well. Aside from the color this step is identical to step four.
