Zenthrus' Step by Step Painting Guide

Step Ten: Back to highlighting the body. I selected Delta Dreamcoat Lilac for the next highlight texture for the body. This step required the use of a #000 brush. The detail is too fine to continue to get smooth edges with a #1 or #0 brush. You want to constantly strive to keep a thin line of the previous color visible. If you cover too much of the previous color your mini will lose it's shading. If you don't cover enough your mini's colors will not look smoothly blended.

NOTE: Touchup. While adding the Lilac highlights I noticed a few things that were a little off. I had mistakenly painted part of the front right paw instead of the inside claw, I had neglected to add sandstone to a couple of bony protrusions, and I noticed a tiny bit of pewter winking at me from underneath one of the rear claws. Be sure that you touchup your mini as needed. Also be on the lookout for areas that require touchup as you are painting. Had I continued much further I would have needed to mix up multiple colors of paint (since most of what I noticed only needed one or two coats it wasn't that big of a deal). Each time you have to mix up more paint for a small touch up area most of that paint goes to waste. While I am using one of the least expensive acrylic paints on the market it is still not good to waste more than you need to.

NOTE: Mixing Water. At this point in the mini I have applied ten different colors of paint. The water I use to mix paints and clean my brushes looks like vomitous soup. It is a good idea to replace your water periodically since if the water is too saturated with pigment it can distort your colors. Most painting FAQs recommend that you change your mixing/cleaning water more frequently than every ten colors. I've found that ten is a decent point at which the colors aren't being influenced heavily but the water is getting pretty murky. The primary exception to this is when painting white highlights I always start with a fresh cup of water. It doesn't take much to corrupt white.
