Zenthrus' Step by Step Painting Guide
Displacer Beast
Final Step: Basing. Basing is the part of miniature painting that I am least experienced at. Since I liked how the charcoal base compliments the purple Displacer Beast I was tempted to leave it plain. Unfortunately plain bases are boring. So, I painted another thin layer of charcoal carefully around the base and then sprinkled colored craft sand over it. After letting the paint (which acts as glue for the sand) dry I gently tap around the rim of the base to remove any excess sand. Since I wanted to preserve a primarily charcoal-colored base I then brushed charcoal paint in patches onto the sand giving it a shadowy, scattered effect. The next step was to attach some decorative rocks to the base using liquid superglue. I then used a very thin paint mixture of Charcoal (loaded the brush then dipped it into my cleaning water for a few seconds) to coat the rocks. I sloppily brushed Delta Dreamcoat Moss Green onto the rocks as highlight followed by stippling with Delta Dreamcoat Mudstone. I like the overall effect since the Beast looks like it's creeping through shadowy rocks while waiting to pounce on prey.
NOTE: For longevity of your paintjob be sure to cover the entire miniature with a matte finish such as Testor's Dull Cote. This will protect your mini's paint from wear and tear (such as DDM tournaments or D&D games) but won't save it from severe damage (dropping, throwing, or putting heavy objects on top.
